Affirming its resolve to defeat the terrorists ravaging the
northern part of the country, the military yesterday deployed 500 troops
in Adamawa, Yobe and Borno states. The Defence Headquarters disclosed that
there were ongoing highly coordinated air and land operations towards
“stabilising” some of the cities, which have been under the siege of Boko Haram
for days. The military authorities also described as alarmist reports that
Maiduguri was surrounded by the terrorists, who were on the verge of over-running
it. A statement from the Defence Headquarters posted on its Twitter handle,
said that the situation in Mubi, Michika, Bazza, Gulak, Gwoza, Bama, Gamboru
Ngala and other parts of the North East is being stabilised, as highly
coordinated air and land operations are ongoing. The efforts are yielding
impressive results in the overall move to rid area of terrorists. It also noted
that alarmist report on foreign and online media on Maiduguri is clearly
intended to cause panic in the city and the nation. All facets of security
arrangements for the defence of Maiduguri have been upgraded to handle any
planned attack or attempt to disrupt the city’s prevailing peace. This kind of
alarmist report is uncalled for in view of our efforts. Citizens are
nevertheless enjoined to remain vigilant as they go about their lawful
business. The Coordinator of the National Information Centre (NIC), Mr.
Mike Omeri, told reporters in Abuja Thursday that the deployment of
the troops was contrary to the rumours that there was no presence of military
in the affected states. The Borno Elders Forum (BOEF) had yesterday raised the
alarm of Boko Haram’s imminent capture of Maiduguri.
